How Long Does It Take to Paint the Interior of a House?
Owner, Catalyst Painting · Published October 7, 2026

Most single rooms take a professional crew one day. A full home interior runs anywhere from one to ten days, depending on the size of the house, how much repair the walls need, and whether ceilings and trim are included. You should get a written schedule before the first drop cloth goes down.
That’s a wide range, and it’s wide on purpose. Here’s what pushes a job toward the short end or the long one.
How long does it take to paint one room?
A day, for a standard bedroom or living room.
That day isn’t all painting. Furniture gets moved and covered. Floors and trim get masked. Nail holes and small dings get patched. Then the walls get two coats, and everything goes back where it was. The rolling is the quick part.
Some rooms run longer. Kitchens and bathrooms are small, but they’re all edges: cabinets, tile, mirrors, fixtures. Cutting clean lines around every one of them takes more time than rolling a big open wall. A two-story entry or a stairwell is slower too, because the work happens from a ladder.
How long does a whole house take?
On our jobs, one to ten days.
A smaller home with walls in good shape, walls only, sits at the short end. A large home with ceilings, trim, doors, and repair work sits at the long end. Square footage matters less than people expect. Two houses the same size can land days apart because one needs patching in every room and the other needs none.
What adds days to an interior paint job?
Four things, mostly.
Wall repair. Nail pops, cracks, and holes get fixed before any paint goes on. Patching compound has to dry before it can be sanded and primed, and that step can’t be rushed. A house with a lot of repair is a longer job even when the painting itself is simple.
Ceilings and trim. Walls alone are the fastest version. Adding ceilings, baseboards, doors, and window trim means more surface and slower, more careful work.
Big color changes. Going from a dark color to a light one, or into a deep saturated shade, can take extra coats to cover cleanly.
Height. Vaulted ceilings and stairwells mean ladders, and ladders mean slower cutting in.
Can you stay in the house while it’s being painted?
Yes. You don’t have to move out, and you don’t have to move your own furniture.
We move and cover it, mask the floors, and clean up completely at the end of every day. The house stays livable the whole time. The one thing worth planning for is which rooms are being worked on which day, and that comes with the schedule.
What can you do to keep the job on schedule?
Pick your colors early. This is the big one. Color has to be chosen before the work starts, and a change of mind halfway through can add both cost and days. If you’re stuck between two whites, that’s what the free color consultation is for.
Take the pictures down. The big furniture is ours to handle, but clearing wall art, shelves, and countertops the night before means the crew starts painting sooner.
Say everything at the estimate. The closet interiors, the hallway you weren’t sure about, the door to the garage. Anything added after the job starts stretches the schedule. Anything named up front is already in it.
What about kitchen cabinets?
Cabinets are their own timeline. A full kitchen usually runs about a week, because doors and drawers are finished in a controlled setting to get a smooth, durable result. We broke down the difference in interior painting vs. cabinet painting.

Quick answers
How long does it take a professional to paint a room?
Most single rooms take a professional crew one day. That covers moving and covering furniture, masking, patching small dings, two coats on the walls, and cleanup. Kitchens, bathrooms, and rooms with tall walls can take longer.
How long does it take to paint the whole interior of a house?
A full interior runs from one to ten days, depending on the size of the home, how much wall repair is needed, and whether ceilings, trim, and doors are included. Your estimate should state the expected duration in writing.
Can I stay home while the interior of my house is painted?
Yes. You don't have to move out. The crew moves and covers furniture, masks the floors, and cleans up completely at the end of every day, so the house stays livable while the work is underway.
Do I need to move furniture before the painters arrive?
No. We move and cover the furniture ourselves and put it back when we're done. It does help to take pictures off the walls and clear small items from shelves and counters the night before.
