Should You Hire a Painter or DIY? The Honest Math

Paint it yourself when the job is small, low, and in good shape: one bedroom, an accent wall, a fence. Hire a painter when the job involves height, heavy prep, or the whole exterior. The paint is the cheap part. Your hours, the ladder, and the redo when prep goes wrong are the expensive part.

We hear this question a lot, usually from homeowners who have already bought the painter’s tape. It’s a fair question. Nobody should pay for work they can do well themselves, so here’s the honest version, including the jobs where we’d tell you to keep your money.

When does painting it yourself actually make sense?

A room with standard 8-foot ceilings, walls that only need a little spackle, and a color close to what’s already there is a good DIY project. So is a garage, a basement, a fence, or a front door you want to refresh.

What those jobs have in common: low risk, low height, and very little prep. If a line comes out wavy in a guest room, you’ll live. If you enjoy the work and have a free weekend, go for it.

What does hiring a painter cost in Kansas City?

We don’t publish exact prices, and that’s on purpose. Paint, labor, and material costs move every season, so a number that was true in June is wrong by October. What we can tell you: most of our interior jobs land in the low thousands, most full exteriors in the mid thousands, and the spread on both is wide. A single bedroom costs a fraction of a whole-house repaint, and a large two-story exterior with a lot of repair work costs well more than a one-story ranch in good shape. There’s a deeper breakdown in our post on what interior painting costs in Kansas City, and every real quote starts with someone looking at your walls.

What does DIY really cost once you count everything?

The paint aisle makes DIY look cheap. The full list is longer: primer, caulk, spackle, sandpaper, tape, drop cloths, rollers, a good angled brush, a roller extension, and a ladder tall enough to reach the ceiling safely. If you don’t already own the tools, they add up before the first coat goes on.

Then there’s time. An average bedroom done right means moving furniture, patching, sanding, taping, cutting in, two coats, and cleanup. For most people that’s a full weekend, sometimes two. Multiply that by a whole floor and you’re giving up a month of Saturdays.

None of that is a reason not to do it. It’s just the real price.

Where do DIY paint jobs usually go wrong?

Almost never in the part people worry about. Rolling paint onto a wall is easy. The failures happen before and between coats.

Painting over glossy or dirty surfaces is the big one, because the new paint has nothing to grip and starts peeling early. Rushing the second coat is another. So is skipping primer over patches, which leaves dull spots that show through in certain light.

Outside, the classic mistake is washing the house and painting the same day. Siding that feels dry on the surface can still hold water underneath. We often powerwash on a Saturday and come back a day or two later to start prep for exactly that reason. You can read more about how that plays out in why paint peels and the real fix.

Should you ever paint your own exterior?

A one-story ranch with siding in decent shape? Some handy homeowners do fine. A shed or a fence? Absolutely.

A two-story house is where we’d push back. Hours on an extension ladder, holding a brush with one hand, is how people get hurt, and falls from ladders are no small risk. Exterior prep also takes longer than most people plan for, and Kansas City weather doesn’t wait for your schedule. If an exterior job drags into cold nights, the paint may not cure the way it should. Here’s how late in the year you can paint an exterior here.

Get a real number before you decide

The smartest way to make this call is to know both numbers. Price out your supplies, then get a free estimate on the same job. If the gap is small, your weekends are worth more. If it’s big and the job is simple, paint it yourself with our blessing.

If you do hire us, you get Sherwin-Williams products, a 5-year written workmanship warranty, a free color consultation, and no deposit. You pay nothing until the job is complete. Schedule your free estimate and see what the honest math looks like for your home.

Quick answers

Is it cheaper to paint a room yourself?

Usually, yes, for a single room with walls in good shape. Your cost is paint, primer, supplies, and a weekend. The savings shrink fast once you add tall walls, a lot of trim, drywall repairs, or a big color change that needs extra coats.

Should I paint my own house exterior?

Most homeowners shouldn't on anything taller than one story. Ladder work on a two-story house is the real risk, and exterior paint fails early when the prep gets rushed. A shed, a fence, or a front door are fair DIY projects.

How much does it cost to hire a painter in Kansas City?

We don't publish exact prices, because costs change every season. Most of our interior jobs land in the low thousands and most full exteriors in the mid thousands, with a wide spread on both. Size, prep, and scope decide where your home lands, so a free estimate is the only real number.

What is the hardest part of painting for a DIYer?

Prep and patience. Cutting clean lines takes practice, but most failures come from painting over dirty, glossy, or damp surfaces, or rushing the second coat before the first has dried. Those mistakes don't show on day one. They show a year later.
