SuperPaint vs. Duration vs. Emerald: Which Exterior Paint Is Worth It in Kansas City?

If your house is in decent shape and you plan to stay a while, Duration is the paint we’d put on it. SuperPaint is a solid choice for a sound house or a sale in the next couple of years. Emerald is for the homeowner who wants Sherwin-Williams’ best and plans to be there for the long haul.

All three are Sherwin-Williams exterior paints. All three are on every exterior estimate we send as choices you pick yourself. So this is the same conversation we have in driveways every week, written down.

What’s actually different between the three?

The base is the same family: exterior acrylic latex. What changes is how much paint ends up on the wall and how well it holds up once it’s there.

SuperPaint is our standard, and it’s included in your price. It’s a quality paint, and on a house with sound siding and good prep it does the job well.

Duration builds a thicker coat than ordinary latex. Sherwin-Williams rates it for excellent protection from cracking, peeling, and blistering, it’s self-priming, and it carries a mildew-resistant coating.

Emerald is Sherwin-Williams’ top-of-the-line exterior paint. You’re paying for the best they make.

Why does Kansas City weather change the answer?

Because paint here doesn’t fail from one big event. It fails from repetition.

Picture a south-facing wall in February. It warms up in the afternoon sun, the siding moves, and then it drops below freezing overnight. Any water that got behind a crack expands. Do that a few dozen times a winter, add a humid July and the odd hailstorm, and you can see why the thicker coat matters on the walls that take the worst of it.

(If you’ve lived here a while, you already know. Kansas City weather, IYKYK.)

That’s the practical reason Duration is our default recommendation.

When is SuperPaint the right call?

More often than people expect.

If the siding is sound, the old paint is well bonded, and the house mostly sits in shade, SuperPaint is a good paint doing an easy job. It’s also the sensible pick if you’re painting to sell. A buyer sees fresh color and clean trim, not the product name on the can, so spending on the top tier for a house you’re leaving in a year rarely pays you back.

We’d rather tell you that than sell you an upgrade you won’t use.

When is Emerald worth the upgrade?

When you’re staying for the long haul, or when one wall takes the kind of afternoon sun that bakes paint for hours. If you’re going to live with this paint job for a decade, the top tier is easier to justify.

Some homeowners just want the best paint on the house, period. That’s a fair reason too.

Does the paint matter more than the prep?

No. Prep is the part that decides how any of the three performs.

Emerald over damp siding fails early. So does Duration over a caulk joint that’s already pulling away. We wash the house and then let it dry, often coming back a day or two later to start prep, because siding that feels dry on the surface can still hold water underneath. We use the most expensive caulk Sherwin-Williams offers in every joint that needs it. Soft wood gets repaired or replaced before anything goes on it (more on that in wood rot repair before painting).

And we price the job on getting full, even coverage, not on a coat count. Good paint over good prep is the combination that lasts. If you’re curious how long that combination should go before the next repaint, our post on when to repaint in the Kansas City climate covers the warning signs.

How do you choose on your estimate?

Every exterior estimate we send shows all three paints, with SuperPaint already in your price and the upgrades listed next to it. You pick the one you want, and the total updates right there.

If you’re torn, ask us on the estimate visit. We’ll look at which walls take the sun, how the current paint is holding, and how long you plan to stay, and we’ll tell you straight which one we’d put on your house.

There’s no deposit, ever. You pay nothing until the job is complete, and every exterior is backed by our 5-year written warranty. Schedule your free estimate, or see more of our work on the exterior painting page.

Quick answers

Is Sherwin-Williams Duration better than SuperPaint for exteriors?

Duration goes on as a thicker coat than ordinary latex and is self-priming, and Sherwin-Williams rates it for excellent protection from cracking, peeling, and blistering. SuperPaint is a quality exterior paint that holds up well on a sound house. Duration is the step up for siding that takes a beating.

Is Emerald worth the extra cost on a house exterior?

It can be, if you plan to stay a long time or one side of the house takes hard afternoon sun. Emerald is Sherwin-Williams' top-of-the-line exterior paint. If you're painting to sell in the next year or two, SuperPaint or Duration usually makes more sense.

Can you paint a house exterior in cold weather with these paints?

All three are rated by Sherwin-Williams for application down to 35 degrees. We can work in that range, but we usually choose not to push that close to it, because drying slows down in the 35 to 45 degree range.

Does the paint matter more than the prep?

No. The best paint on the shelf fails early over damp wood, failed caulk, or soft spots. Prep decides whether the paint gets to do its job, and the paint decides how long it keeps doing it.
