What Color Should You Paint Your House to Sell?
Owner, Catalyst Painting · Published October 30, 2026

Paint your house in warm, light neutrals if you want to sell it: soft white, greige, or light beige on the walls, and a classic exterior that fits your street, like white or a muted blue with crisp trim. Neutral colors let buyers picture their own things in the space, not your taste.
That’s the short version, and real estate agents and paint makers mostly agree on it. The longer version is about where neutral matters most, where a little color still earns its keep, and when a fresh coat helps a sale more than the color itself does.
Why do neutral colors help a house sell?
Picture a buyer walking into your living room. They’re trying to imagine their couch on that wall, their kids in the back bedroom, their holidays at that table. A deep red dining room or a dark teal bedroom interrupts all of that.
Now they’re thinking about repainting before they move in. And a project they have to do becomes a reason to offer less, or to keep looking.
Listing photos matter too. Most buyers see your house online long before they see it in person, and light, neutral rooms photograph bright and open. Dark or busy walls tend to make rooms look smaller on a screen.
What are the best interior colors to sell a house?
Warm off-whites, greige (a mix of gray and beige), and light beige are the safe bets. They work with almost any furniture a buyer owns, which is the whole point.
A few specifics we’d keep in mind:
- Skip stark, bright white. It can read cold and empty in person. A white with a little warmth feels finished.
- Keep one color through the main living areas. Rooms that flow into each other look bigger and more connected when the walls match.
- Watch the trim and ceilings. Yellowed trim and dingy ceilings make fresh walls look worse. Clean white trim does a lot of quiet work.
- Fix the patches properly. On a patched wall, we usually repaint the wall seam to seam so the repair disappears. Dabbing paint over a patch tends to show, especially in afternoon light.
Kitchens and bathrooms follow the same rule. Light and clean beats bold.
What exterior colors help a house sell in Kansas City?
The exterior is your first listing photo and the first thing a buyer sees from the curb. Classic colors win here: white, greige, or beige on the body, with clean white or dark trim. Blue with white trim stays popular too, and it’s a good choice when you want a little personality without turning off buyers.
One color we’d skip: a light or mid-tone gray. Gray has had its run, and we don’t recommend it for a body color anymore. If your heart is set on gray outside, make it a dark, moody gray that looks intentional.
Fit your street. You don’t want to match the house next door, but you also don’t want to be the one house buyers remember for the wrong reason. Look at the roof, brick, and stone too, since those aren’t changing and the new colors have to work with them.
If you’re in an HOA, check the rules before you pick. Our guide to getting HOA approval for exterior paint colors walks through the application.
Is there anywhere bold color still works?
The front door. Navy and black are two of the most popular picks with buyers, and a fresh door color is a small project that shows up in every listing photo. Shutters can carry a darker accent as well. Keep the bold stuff to the outside details and let the walls stay calm.
Should you repaint the whole house or just touch up?
It depends on what you’re starting with. If the paint is in good shape and already neutral, you may only need a few rooms, or just the trim and front door. A full repaint makes sense when the colors are bold, the walls are scuffed throughout, or the exterior is peeling.
Peeling paint is the one to take seriously. It shows up in listing photos and at showings, and it makes buyers wonder what else got put off. Kansas City weather (IYKYK) is hard on exterior paint, so if yours is failing, fix it before you list. Our exterior painting page covers the prep and repairs that go into it, and the interior painting page covers the inside.
How long does painting before a listing take?
Most interiors take one to ten days, depending on size and prep. Most full exteriors take four to seven days, and we clean up after ourselves. The exterior season here runs roughly March into December, so a fall or early winter listing usually still has time, though weather can shift the schedule.
Book the painting before you set a list date. That way the house is finished, dry, and ready for photos on time.

Quick answers
What is the best color to paint a house before selling it?
Warm, light neutrals. Inside, that means soft whites, greige, or light beige. Outside, white, greige, or a muted blue with crisp white trim. If you want gray outside, go with a dark, moody gray, not a light one. These colors let buyers picture their own life in the home instead of your taste.
Should I paint my house white to sell it?
A warm white, yes. A stark, bright white can feel cold and empty in person, so most agents steer sellers toward an off-white with a little warmth in it. On the exterior, white with dark accents is a safe, popular choice.
Is it worth repainting a house before you sell it?
Often, when the current colors are bold, the paint is scuffed, or the exterior is peeling. If the paint is in good shape and already neutral, you may only need a few rooms. A painter can walk the house and tell you which parts actually need it.
What color front door helps sell a house?
Navy and black are two of the most popular picks with buyers. The front door is the one place where a little color is welcome, as long as it works with the body and trim colors and your HOA allows it.
